ZOMBIE ZOMBIE

Wow, how good were Zombie Zombie. Despite having listened to much of their productions in anticipation of their perfromance we (jaco, nomes, marty) weren't expecting to be blown away by the stage antics - including some quite mesmerising 4-armed drumming and nob-fiddling/tweaking that would haver Gary Glitter on stand-by. We did well to swell a hundred people in for the night and sure to say everyone enjoyed the duo as much as our trio. Big thanks to Sharon Dizzy Storm for putting on two amazing shows (olafur at peacock too) in a week.

DUNNOTTAR WINES + SPIRITS

If you find yourself looking for that elusive grape or malt over the festive season then check out Snafu's favourite wine + spirit retailer, Dunnottar, down in Stonehaven. Proprietors Sandy and Jane have put together a winning formula that's already got the local population popping with joy. Loads of tastings and incredibly good value for products not available ANYWHERE else. Nice logo too Jaco we say :)

It's on Evan Street just off the market square, and right next to the Carron Art DEco restaurant.

FELIX CARTAL

Friday 7 Dec was a quality endeavour with the blogtastic Felix fending off many an autograph from his cyberfirends. Quite odd really but his talent, at the ripe age of 20, is there to be heard (links below)... props also to the Last Tango brigade who got the proceedings off early with a fine debut from The Volts (well they've played before but never had a name), Gavin McGinty (always a pleasure) and the spewtastic (photos to follow) duo of Kurtz + Gregz. Great effort and sure to be a regular Snafu occurance.

Also had to include a photo of Matt (spotty puss) on his global farewell. He wasn't making sense but we wish him well on his travels. Bets are on he'll be back under the granite walls within 2-3 weeks.

OLAFUR ARNALDS

Snafu Magazine had the pleasure of hearing the beautiful sounds of Olafur Arnalds last night in Peacock Visual Arts. Appearing with 3 violinists and a cellist Olafur played sensual music with a lullaby influence while a backdrop of powerful imgaes from his native Iceland had the gathering entranced. A nice escapism to the winter snap up here. Read all about it it the next Snafu Magazine >>

Lavelle the week after - his album has really grown on us in Snafu HQ - altho my favourite listening time for it is Sunday clean-up operations... Streetlife see post below... Last Tango is those jolly local crew who rocked a big Wednesday down at Snafu ealrier in the year so they've deserved the weekend spot, especially alongside Pressure favourite Felix Cartal... Erol tickets are pretty much gone - only members are guaranteed entry now... the Soma night is still to be 100% confirmed but when it goes up on our main site you know it's for real... finally Radioskool closes out the year with an A LA FU 'santa's a stingy c**t' special..

MIXTAPE 9 - STREETLIFE DJs

These Streetlife DJs are hitting the Snafu for Radioskool and rumours have it it clashes with Dave Clarke playing across town. Now, not to be a shylock but the 'evil-one' was quite unbelievably boring at TITP.. so much so that i fell asleep, Dominican Republic cigar in mouth (breaking smoking ban), standing up in the Slam Tent to his monotomous drivel... anyways he'll no doubt sell the venue out but mean time Snafu breaks new talent as only we can... we're not SLTN Nightclub of the Year for nothing ken...

check out the STREETLIFE vibe and make your decision for the last pay packet spending before Chrimbo meltdown..

ZOMBIE ZOMBIE live - MON 17 DEC

Check out our interview with these Parisian ghouls in the upcoming SNAFU MAGAZINE release 15 'The Darker Months'.

ZOMBIE ZOMBIE are a crazy scientist and musical project based in Paris, France, lead by two people; professor Etienne Jaumet (Married Monk) and cosmicNeman (Herman Düne), the pair use sound and rythm to explore the feeling of fear growing deep inside of you, by transporting you to a cosmic world of ear tantalizing martians, ear burning synthesising and super cool electro. This is one voyage far from the summer sun of Club Med. Sunday 16th of December sees the living dead lovers take on the Sub Club (Glasgow) with a live showdown at Optimo, and with the help of Dizzy Storm, Snafu are excited to be hosting them for an exclusive live performance at Electrique Boutique. Support comes from resident DJ Giles Walker.

THE DEEP END - REBEL WALTZ

These lads have been rocking the summer over in Barca... at La Terrrazza no less.. a quite amazing outdoor party in this little fake village that normally caters during the day for burnt tourists.. but by night it's a lost city of pure heonistic mayhem. Lovely girls (and guys i guess) galore and with proprietor Alberto sorting out the sound isssues wih the local generalitat we have a serious party right thru the summer. Stuart Patterson is a house don... along with Terry Farley he runs the Faith Fanzine parties in Lundun that have pretty much flown the house flag far above our puny heads for decades... Stuart also runs a lovely bar The Lodge, Harleston, that's a wee disco mecca keeping you well nourished tae boot, plus he's got a jolly monthly night, Shrunken Head, along with Raoul that keeps folk up at strange times dancing round campfires to tribal beats... Murray - where to start? constantatly breking down new territories with his touring schedule thru Brazil, Russia and beyond this is an old school house head who has kept the name of house true to it's roots despite all the fads coming and going.. the DJs' DJ, he's realeased tracks thru Nordic Trax, 2020Vision and other ntoable global labels... The Deep End is proud to present the Rebel Waltz 9th Birhtday bonanaza!!

Black Strobe

You guys have been jabbing us for ages about getting Black Strobe to play at Snafu – and look what we’ve done? In fact there may be very little we need to tell you about this band other than explain the bizarre connection between Norwegian death metal, French club anthems and London super-producer Paul Epworth? It sounds like a particularly intractable example of the six degrees of separation game. However, these seemingly irreconcilable points on the musical compass are linked by French dance rock four-piece Black Strobe.
Over the years, Black Strobe have developed into a thrilling live act, the mix of heavy rock/metal and electro/dance music blends together so succinctly that anyone would believe that this was a combination that was always meant to be mixed together. Helping Black Strobe assemble their wide-ranging and hugely ambitious influences was producer Paul Epworth (PHONES), best known for his work with Bloc Party, Maxïmo Park and The Futureheads. Having written Burn Your Own Church in his home studio in Paris, Arnaud and the band recorded it at Epworth’s Eastcote Studios in West London over three weeks at the start of 2006. It was then mixed by Alan Moulder (U2, Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson). Front man Arnaud compares Black Strobe to Klaxons and The Horrors, “a hybrid of the two isn’t the worst description of our music!”

Elektrons

The Unabombers (Electric Chair - Manchester) – aka Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford – are back with a new live project that delivers a chart-topping slice of phatness, featuring numerous vocalists, that create a dirty basement feeling that unleashes another side of their electric souls.

You can only expect the freshest, most dynamic, confident and sexy sounds from these guys; delivering an upbeat, down and dirty, melting pot that incorporates the finest contemporary British sounds, from East End grime MCs to Northern sulphuric soul and futuristic disco, but informed by the great traditions of Britain’s underground club culture over the last 30 years, from rare groove to acid house.

In recent years, The Unabombers have rocked basements and lofts across the world, from the West Coast of America to Thailand, produced a mighty run of compilation albums, and critically acclaimed re-edits and remixes as Electric Souls. They also began to tour as the Electric Souls Soundsystem, featuring fresh new British vocalists like Pete Simpson, at clubs and festivals like V. “We were almost shocked at the response to the soundsystem’ laughs Luke, “everyone was like ‘You’ve really got something here, you’ve got to get in the studio and capture it.’”

“The Unabombers are rooted in that underground basement sound,” furthers Luke, “but the Elektrons is more a collage of every sound we’re into. It’s still rooted in Black music, but it’s more quintessentially British and reflects that we’re really against that snobbery in the underground towards R&B or two-step or garage. We’re not afraid to throw all those into the pot, so a lot of the tracks on the album have an oddball fusion of all those styles.”

Leave the red light on darling.

So-So Modern

Funky Transport

The Deep End is the North of Scotland's only true underground house night. Each and every Saturday Funky Transport (Brique Rouge, Classic, Chez, Playhouse, Farris Wheel) takes you on a 5 hour house music journey be it deep-classics-disco-tech-soulful-garage or his own edits; always championing cutting edge dance music for the discerning music revellers. Having a DJ/producer of this note at the helm has meant attracting the best possible global guests such as Kerri Chandler, Derrick Carter, Louie Vega, Gene Farris, Joey Negro, Kenny Hawkes, Crazy P, Lindstrom and Prins Thomas as well as championing rising stars by giving Scottish debuts to Jafar, Asad Rizvi, EBM, John Larner, Brett Johnson and Dizzy - to name a few. The rest of this year is no exception with the US's funk house ambassador - Q-Burns Abstract Message (OM, NRK, Astralwerks, Eight Tracks) dropping in to entertain us for shoulder popping good times, following his hectic worldwide touring campaign including the busiest WMC 07 schedule humanly possible - well he is a Florida resident after all. Other guests include a deep house London DJ going places,Natalie C, the ever touring Rebel Waltz party of Murray Richardson (Nordic Trax) and Stuart Patterson (Faith), plus Brazil's kingpin of house parties, from Rio to Sao Paulo, Jota Wagner (Colors) .

Mom.. The Video Broke

Taking inspiration from the digital technology and free thinking of the late 70s and early 80s where electronic music met disco-punk-rock-reggae-dub-funk-soul-hiphop-house and pop records were actually quite good, Martin Jay (The Goodfoot / Estaminet) works his magic to unravel some of the good sounds from the under and over ground throw down of music. There is most definitely no musical discrimination here…
